Other possible functions of rice galactolipids during disease resistance are also discussed. Galactolipids are obtained by isolating two polar lipids from wheat flour that yield a mixture of Galactolipids are a class of compounds widely found in the plant kingdom, including edible plants, and are an important part of the cell membranes. Galactolipids in plants consists mainly of monogalactosyldiacylglycerols and digalactosyldiacylglycerols containing one or two saturated and/or unsaturated fatty acids linked to the glycerol moiety. These include not only basic studies with regard to biochemical features, regulatory systems, in vivo function, but also emerging new focus such as tools for searching the evolutionary origin of chloroplasts, design of herbicides and functions of novel class of oxylipin-containing galactolipids. Complete loss of MGD1 function in a null mutant caused kernel lethality owing to failure in both endosperm and embryo development.

Galactolipids (MGDG and DGDG) and sulfolipids (SQDG) are key components of plastidic membranes, and play important roles in plant development and photosynthesis. In this study, the whole families of MGD, DGD and SQD were identified in maize genome, and were designated as ZmMGD1-3, ZmDGD1-5 and ZmSQD1-5 respectively. Se hela listan på lipidlibrary.aocs.org Some of these functions include insulation, cushioning, energy storage, and making cell membranes. In fact, the lipids' ability to make a cell membrane is vital to your health and bodily function. The ratio of the total amount of non-esterified OPDA and dnOPDA and the total amount of the oxylipin-containing galactolipids in leaves after wounding could provide hints whether the galactolipid species have functions as storage forms of the cyclopentenones, which could be liberated as signaling compounds after leaf damage (Mosblech et al., 2009). Glyceroglycolipids are often associated with photosynthetic membranes and their functions. The subcategories of glyceroglycolipids depend on the carbohydrate attached.

Oxygenic photosynthesis in cyanobacteria and plants depends on the presence of galactolipids. The ratio of the two galactolipids carrying one or two galactoses in the head group is crucial for the maintenance of membrane integrity during stress. The galactolipids have a range of important functions required for establishment of functional myelin and thus, they must be added to the expanding list of essential components of the myelin sheath. The multiplicity of functions performed by the myelin proteins and galactolipids indicates that the remarkable structure and function of myelin results from the combined contributions of its Galactolipids were identified in the X-ray structures of photosynthetic complexes.

The isolation of the genes involved in the biosynthesis of MGDG and DGDG, and the identification of galactolipid-deficient Arabidopsis mutants has greatly facilitated the analysis of galactolipid biosynthesis and function. Until recently, our concept of GalC and sulfatide functions had been principally defined by immunological and chemical perturbation studies that implicate these lipids in oligodendrocyte differentiation, myelin formation, and myelin stability. Recently, however, genetic studies have allowed us to re-analyze the functions of these lipids. Galactolipids, mainly monogalactosyl diglycerides and digalactosyl diglycerides are the main lipids found in the membranes of plants, algae and photosynthetic microorganisms like microalgae and cyanobacteria.

These lipids are also major constituents of internal membrane structures called prolamellar bodies (PLBs) and prothylakoids (PTs) in etioplasts, which develop in the cotyledon cells of dark-grown angiosperms. They are found in chloroplast membranes and are associated with photosynthetic properties. The roles that the myelin galactolipids galactocerebroside (GalC) and sulfatide play in cellular differentiation, myelin formation and maintenance have been investigated for nearly 3 decades. During that time the primary approach has been to perturb lipid activity using antibodies and chemical agents in artificial systems. Recently, the isolation of the gene that encodes UDP-galactose:ceramide
Galactolipids, monogalactosyldiacylglycerol (MGDG) and digalactosyldiacylglycerol (DGDG), are the predominant lipid classes in the thylakoid membrane of chloroplasts.
